Eurogamer gets in on the Action
Written by Guru Bear

Wurm on EurogamerThere is a writer that really loves us out there. Which we are rather glad about. He is also getting rather well known. So when I phoned Eurogamer to say "you know you have nothing about Wurm on your site," I got two replies. One was, "Never heard of you," which was a little disconcerting, and the other was "but we know this writer called Quintin .." Well, funny you should say that, I thought.

To cut a long story to a sensible length (which basically means I should shut up) you can read the resulting article by clicking here. And maybe some of the other Eurogamer people can come and play for themselves, and very welcome they will be too!

At Last - A New Land and a New Look
Written by Kingdom Scribe
Wednesday, 17 June 2009 14:03

After weeks of design, discussion and late night dinners, Wurm Online has launched a brand new server - Independence, The Freedom Isles.

Far in the southern hemisphere of Wurm, past the blue mountains of the dreaded Circle Sea, lay the Freedom Isles; a long sought after refuge from war and want, from raids and the ravages of time, these lands offer a place of peace and adventure. The first of these lands has been named Independence, to reflect that the early refugees are seeking their freedom from the Kingdoms of Mol Rehan, Jenn Kellon and the Horde of the Summoned. These lands will be strictly non-pvp and will be continually developed to reduce griefing and harassment while still allowing the citizens the widest possible opportunity to build, create, terraform the world and develop a whole new society.

steppe-spire-tbThis land is very different from previous lands. Though it shares some of the mountainous feel of the Mol Rehan home lands, it also boasts mighty forests and Fjords, vast plains and steppes and a high altitude, lost world, ripe for the taking. This will be an adventure for all, experienced or new from Golden Valley, our starter server.

First Footing

Players who take ship from the Kingdoms arrive at the north of the land. They may wish to make for the massive Fjord, a little to the East of a tall mountain, where they will find the small, underdeveloped area where players using the portals arrive. There are no plans to develop the starter town since it is coastal. It has just two small shacks and the beginnings of a grand highway, apparently abandoned.

You will probably want to scout out a more inland position for a central trading town that is more accessible to the whole map, rather than the gods choose it for you. You can then decide between you how large it should be, who runs it, how you all pay for the upkeep and so on. It is entirely up to you. Then you can build a spectacular highway from the starter town to your new capital...

The New Look

As you will have already found out, Wurm has massively upgraded its look. Kinoss has spent days reworking all the tile textures, upgrading them to a larger size and taking into account some comments over the years that the Beta servers had a warmer feel to them. For those of you with faster graphics and running Wurm with everything on "eleven," the tiles are now far more detailed, giving a hint more realism to the game. Mortimar has also been working on new walls and fences - the fences are the first to arrive.

Following hard on the heals of this update will be a tree update - you will see some of those in the screen shots of the new server. They are not completely finished yet, so stand by for those!

And of course, the Freedom game has a brand new look for its citizens. This more rural look reflects the mature, laid back nature of life on Independence, and the other lands of the Freedom Isles as they arrive.

A New Micro Site

websitescreenAs with the other Kingdoms, Freedom has its own micro website for news and information. It is mostly blank for the moment, but we at the massive web department of Wurm Online, are waiting, pens poised, for news to come flooding in from the players as they make their new homes in this wonderful new world. Find the site here,

What Next?

Well, the countdown to the closing of the two original home servers has begun, and very soon the focus will turn to the players migrating to the Wild server where the Kingdoms are pitted against each other.

Meanwhile, development has started on the new Epic server; a land of challenges and stories where PvP will be very much required! And there will also be more changes to Golden Valley to make that a better place to find your feet before meeting the challenges that the Premium

But for the moment, it is the time of Freedom and the people who are on their way to Independence. Braving the seas by ship, taking the God's portals from the old lands and from the Portal Steppe on Golden Valley.

Freedom is now just a couple of days away, so we have written this short FAQ to take care of various question that we think will come up as Wurm goes through this vast transition. We cannot guarentee that we answered all your questions, however, if it is not down here, it is probably becasue we have yet to make a descision on it. As the changes continue, and we move into the next phase, we will revise this FAQ, removing those parts no longer relevant and answering questions about the next stage.

Wonderful Rock Paper Shotgun Interviews Rolf!
Written by Guru Bear

Rock Paper ShotgunYou can get very fond of some people! In this case it is Quintin Smith, the writer of the fantastic article about Wurm Online in PC Gamer. Well, we couldn't leave it there! So a quick conversation later and we managed to set him up an interview with our very own Rolf Jansson. Of course, it is never as simple as all that and emails flew back and forth a little, but it was eventually all done and today Rock Paper Shotgun have published a new article about Wurm Online complete with the interview.

You can tell Quinn really likes this game, even his criticism of bits of it sounds like praise - and we cant ask more than that! Rolf supplied really good answers to some probing questions about the recent changes in the game as well as how he sees the game industry in general

PC Gamer Loves Us!
Written by Kingdom Scribe

pc gamer magazineNot one, or two, or three ... but SIX pages of coverage in one of the biggest selling PC gaming mags out there. In the UK version of PC Gamer,  Quinin Smith has written a wonderful account of the early experiences of a slightly more than out-of-his-depth new Wurmian. This article was completely unexpected, which made it a particular delight, and was brought to Enki's attention by a new player. Greasemark, who had come to play the game because he had just read the article. And it seems that other people have been reading it too for Golden Valley has certainly been much busier than usual, keeping Enki and the PA team well and truly on their toes.

"Lost in the middle of a dense forest, crowded with ravenous mountain lions," are the opening words of this detailed article. It is not a review, but rather a dialogue about how Quinns survived in his earliest of days. This is so much better than the standard review as it really does give a flavour of one aspect of the game. Although not always wildly accurate, it is a rather pleasant reminder of how a lot of us got Wurm Online completely wrong in our early days, and made assumptions that were well and truly wide of the mark. To be fair, I have now spoken to Quintin, and he says that the inaccuracies seem to have appeared at point of the editors pen rather than his own!

Sadly for a lot of you, this appears to be unique to the UK edition, however, I will be contacting the publishers, Future Publishing, to ask if we may reproduce the text on our website. They may say no, but at least its worth asking! I will keep you informed. Oh, and why not go and say wonderful things about Wurm on the PC Gamer Forums

EDIT: I have been told that once the magazine goes off sale the article will be put up on the PC Gamer website.

So it only remains for all the team to welcome all the new players who have come here having read the article, and all other new players that found us in other ways!

Welcome to Wurm - we have been waiting for you!

King Kong AI deviation detected
Written by Rolf
Wednesday, 01 April 2009 13:13

King Kong AIToday is a historical moment in the history of Wurm Online. Following the recent breeding and AI updates, it seems that some part of the code produced a bit more intelligence than was expected.

This morning I received an alarming email where a player claimed to be kept hostage by a primate called King Kong. The creature had muted and frozen the player - actions normally only available to Game Moderators.

However, like you have noted the AI system does allow for creatures to select various actions such as for instance graze, breed and select fighting stances. In certain rare cases they may also select other actions depending on their breed. For instance, I recently heard that apparently gorillas have started to kill cows.

This gorilla obviously had chosen the Rename and Set Power actions, resulting in him becoming a High God named King Kong. For some reason he also decided to Mute and Freeze the player in question, effectively taking her hostage. She could only stand and watch as the gorilla "trod around his territory looking for intruders" and "showing off emotes".

I honestly saw no reason to argue with the primate since I didn't understand his gibberish in local chat and it only reacted with hostility to my emote attempts. Unfortunately I accidentally selected Destroy instead of Freeze as I was going to examine it. I don't know when we'll see another one like this. Maybe in a year.
